What a special morning at Capel
Primary School as we celebrated NAIDOC Week 2025 with the unveiling of a stunning new mural, Baarda maara, baarda kaatidjin, meaning open hands, opening learning in Noongar.
Created by artist Cassandra Bynder using inspiration from Pre-primary, Year 3 and Year 5 students, the artwork reflects Capel’s unique landscape, flora, fauna, and rich Noongar culture.
The mural was proudly funded and supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency and the Shire of Capel, with Councillor Fergusson, Jeremy O’Neill, Donna Sims and Stephanie Tilbrook attending the event to celebrate with students and staff.
The assembly opened with a powerful didgeridoo performance by Noongar youth JJ Goodlad, followed by a moving explanation of the mural by Cassandra, and two beautiful songs by the Capel Primary School choir, including Kalyakoori sung entirely in Noongar.
This mural is more than art, it’s a symbol of connection, knowledge and culture that will inspire for generations to come.
