Community Awards

The Shire holds an annual event in January to celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to our community.

During this event, all eligible nominees who are Shire residents and who have made an exceptional contribution to their community are acknowledged on the day and their nominators are also invited to attend. 

The awards presented at this event include the:

Young Community Citizen of the Year

A young person (between 12 and 25 years) you believe has delivered outstanding service to his or her community.

Community Citizen of the Year

A person you believe has delivered outstanding service to his or her community.

Senior Community Citizen of the Year

An older person (over 65 years) you believe has delivered outstanding service to his or her community.

Active Citizenship- Group or Event 

A group doing outstanding work, or for an event staged in the community during the past year.

Selection Criteria

Please note the following selection criteria for each award.

Informing the nominee:  The nominator is required to ensure that their nominee knows and give approval to be nominated.  

Residency

  • Must be a current resident of the Shire of Capel
  • Must include contact details for both the nominee and nominator.

Community Service

Include the following information:

  • Name of organisation(s) served
  • Years of service
  • Positions held
  • Initiatives or projects instigated
  • Photo of the nominee doing their volunteering.

 Achievements

Briefly describe any important achievements that the nominee has been responsible for or made a significant contribution to whilst serving the community. Please note, these achievements cannot but due to paid employment.

  • Contributions and benefits to the community
  • Describe how the nominee’s contribution has benefitted the local and /or wider community
  • Previous honours / awards
  • Include samples of press articles, awards, certificates etc.

For the Youth Award only: Leadership

  • Leadership / mentoring roles
  • Role model for peers
  • Encourages participation of peers.

Essential Criteria:

🔹 Nominees must be a resident of the Shire of Capel, or the organisation must be located within the Shire.
🔹 Nominees must be a volunteer who is not paid for their community work.
🔹 You must inform the person that you are nominating them as a courtesy, as we will be contacting them with an invitation to the event.
🔹 All nominees and nominators will be invited to the event with some of their family members or their community group members.
