Shire of Capel Awarded Gold Status as a Waterwise Council

The Shire of Capel has been formally recognised as a Gold Status Waterwise Council, highlighting its continued commitment to sustainable water management and long-term environmental leadership.



Jointly run by the Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, the Waterwise Council Program supports local governments across Western Australia to improve water efficiency and implement waterwise practices. The Program promotes collaboration between state and local governments while acknowledging Councils that are leading by example in building waterwise communities.


The Shire has been an endorsed Waterwise Council for 11 years and has consistently demonstrated leadership in responsible water management through long-term planning and on-ground initiatives.


Key achievements that contributed to the Shire of Capel receiving Gold Waterwise Council status include:


Waterwise Achievements
• Implementing a long-term Water Management Action Plan
• Maintaining a best-practice Waterwise Verge Policy
• Establishing a dedicated Water Management Team
• Completion of extensive staff training to meet groundwater and scheme watering compliance
• Delivery of an annual scheme watering program
• Planting of over 5,500 waterwise trees across the Shire
• Development and implementation of the Shire’s Sustainability Framework to guide climate change resilience and water conservation


Shire President Doug Kitchen acknowledged the endorsement by saying that, “Council recognises that this accreditation reflects the Shire’s long-term commitment to creating a community that values and manages water sustainably. This status reflects the Shire’s proactive efforts in conserving groundwater, promoting sustainable practices, and engaging the community in environmental stewardship.


The Shire’s efforts were also recognised by the Minister for Water as part of the 2025 Waterwise Recognition event, celebrating local governments across the State that demonstrate innovation and best practice in water resource management.
