Capel Marron Farm Grand Opening Marks Major Boost for Capel’s Agribusiness and Visitor Economy

The Shire of Capel proudly acknowledges the official grand opening of Capel Marron Farm, a revitalised agribusiness and emerging Agri-tourism destination set to strengthen Capel’s economy and visitor appeal.

The expanded facility was formally opened with the support of the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants Program, with South West Minister Don Punch officiating the opening. A public opening is planned for Friday, 23 January 2026, inviting the community and visitors to experience this exciting new destination firsthand.

The Shire’s Development Services team worked closely with owners Jordan and Scott throughout the planning, development and approvals process, supporting the project from concept to completion. This collaborative approach balanced regulatory requirements with innovation, helping deliver a high-quality, future-focused facility for the region.

First established in 1988, Capel Marron Farm has long been part of Capel’s agricultural landscape. In 2019, the property embarked on a new chapter driven by a bold vision for innovation, sustainability and long-term regional growth. Since then, the farm has undergone significant redevelopment and restoration, with the expanded marron hatchery becoming the cornerstone of its operations.

This transformation was supported by a $147,280 RED Grant awarded in 2022, positioning the farm to launch a unique hospitality and tourism experience centred around the iconic South West marron.

The expanded hatchery responds to strong national and international demand for marron, which continues to exceed supply. By increasing breeding frequency by 300–400 per cent, the facility can simulate three to four breeding cycles per year, significantly improving stock availability for growers while supporting more efficient breeding and genetic refinement.

Operating within a commercialised, controlled environment, the hatchery also reduces the cost per animal, enabling more affordable juvenile marron supply and strengthening industry resilience in the post-COVID landscape.

Beyond commercial outcomes, the expansion delivers meaningful community and environmental benefits. The facility has the capacity to supply juvenile marron for government and recreational fisheries programs to help replenish wild stocks. Through its Contract Growers Model, Capel Marron Farm provides partners with reliable, cost-effective access to juveniles while establishing the site as a centre for marron research, innovation and industry collaboration.

The Shire congratulates Jordan and Scott on their vision and dedication and commends their contribution to Capel’s growing reputation as a hub for innovative agribusiness, sustainable investment and exceptional visitor experiences.

The Shire looks forward to seeing Capel Marron Farm flourish as it opens its gates to the community and visitors alike.
