Australia Day is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate being part of our nation’s story.
We are vibrant and distinct as one of the most diverse societies in the world and we are blessed to be home to the oldest living culture on earth. While all of our stories may begin in different places, we’re bonded by a common future that we can create together.
All over the country there were hundreds of Citizenship ceremonies, welcoming thousands of our newest citizens as Australians, who all play an important role in our national identity and who will contribute to and share our common future.
We were thrilled to welcome 34 new conferees from 15 countries, including the Philippines, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, India, Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Wales, South Africa, Armenia, United Kingdom, Moldova, United States and Brazil, who celebrated their citizenship today. Singer and Performer, Hadassah led us all in singing the National Anthem as new Australians.
Australia Day Ambassador guest speaker Jawaria Mahmood offered her encouragement to people who are new citizens to get involved in the community such as by volunteering, finding ways to share their culture and getting out and about to experience the south west's nature and environment.
Shire President John Fergusson presided over the ceremony, with The Hon Don Punch MLA and Shire Deputy President Rosina Mogg presenting certificates. Also in attendance were Shire Honorary Freeman Margaret Smith, Chris Scott, Julian Sanders and Michael Titchbon, and Shire Councillor Terri Sharp.
