Have Your Say on the FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) Bin Service

Why is this happening?

Right now, there are no local facilities to process FOGO waste into compost due to the high rates of contamination in our FOGO bins. This means your food and garden waste is being transported long distances or to landfill, increasing the cost to rate payers and reducing the environmental benefit of the service.

Previously, the Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility managed by Bunbury Harvey Regional Council (BHRC) processed the FOGO materials from the Shire of Capel along with seven local government areas in the South-West. In recent months, the Shire was informed that the Facility is unable to continue to process our FOGO materials and will remain closed to this service for the foreseeable future due to high contamination rates of FOGO materials alongside capacity constraints. Disappointedly, this means that our FOGO material is currently being diverted to landfill.

The Shire is one of seven local governments working collaboratively to find a regional solution that is cost-effective and sustainable for FOGO processing. As a collective, we are currently tendering for a FOGO processing facility to gain a better understanding of the current market and cost impacts. In the meantime, we want to hear from you about whether the existing FOGO service meets your needs.
