Witness
statements accompanied with photographic or video footage are
more effective in the sense that they provide evidence that can
be used in Police investigations and in Court. Community members
should also take down the vehicle's registration number and the
time, date and location of the incident.
All
community members who report an incident will need to testify
in Court. Senior Sergeant Russell Gardiner informed Neighbourhood
Watch members that retribution is unlikely with regards to hooning
offences due to serious penalites and consequences for offenders
who threaten/harm witnesses. Providing Police with a witness statement
is not necessarily 'dobbing' and should be viewed as saving lives.
The new legislation is aimed at targeting the reckless and selfish
behavious of drivers who threaten other road users through disregard
for road rules and safety.
