COMMUNITY SAFETY

Police Officer located at Shire Office

Officer Paul Crawford, who is the Outside Enquiry Officer for the Bunbury Police, will be based at the Capel Shire Office every Tuesday morning until mid September. He will be available from 9am to 11am for community consultation. The Shire of Capel encourage community members and business owners to take advantage of this opportunity by discussing any concerns or grievances with Officer Crawford.

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch meetings are an ideal opportunity for community members to share their concerns and grievances with the local Police. The partnership between the community and the Police is a real plus for both parties. The Police gain assistance with criminal investigations and community members gain information about crime prevention and community safety. The Shire of Capel encourages all members and residents to get involved and come along to Neighbourhood Watch meetings.

If you would prefer Neighbourhood Watch meetings to be held during daylight hours, please contact Donna Sims, Community Safety and Crime Prevention Coordinator on 9727 0222.

New Anti-Hoon Legislation

Police are calling on the community to help identify local hoons.

The new anti-hoon legislation, which came into effect on Monday 30 April 2007, allows Police to act on witness statements and impound cars when drivers are caught speeding more than 45 kmh above the limit.

Witness statements accompanied with photographic or video footage are more effective in the sense that they provide evidence that can be used in Police investigations and in Court. Community members should also take down the vehicle's registration number and the time, date and location of the incident.

All community members who report an incident will need to testify in Court. Senior Sergeant Russell Gardiner informed Neighbourhood Watch members that retribution is unlikely with regards to hooning offences due to serious penalites and consequences for offenders who threaten/harm witnesses. Providing Police with a witness statement is not necessarily 'dobbing' and should be viewed as saving lives. The new legislation is aimed at targeting the reckless and selfish behavious of drivers who threaten other road users through disregard for road rules and safety.
