Repelling Mosquitoes Naturally
There's one major drawback to working in the garden or sitting on the patio at dusk enjoying the sunset - mozzies!
You can protect yourself by wearing insect repellant and loose clothing, use mozzie zappers and burn mosquito coils; but if you're still plagued by this rampant little beast, here are some plants that will help keep mozzies away.
Horsemint - It grows in most soil types and has a scent similar to citronella.
Mozzie Blocker - Is a useful native plant (Leptospermum liversidgei), which emits citronella into the air and can repel mosquitoes within about three square metres. Another mozzie plant (Chysanthemum cinerarifolium) is a member of the Geranium family and has been engineered to incorporate the properties of citronella. It releases the citronella when pruned.
Rosemary - A wonderful herb for seasoning but it is also a great natural mozzie repellant and grows in most soils. Rosemary can be crushed with Lemongrass, then boiled, strained and used as a spray in the air around you.
Marigolds - These delightful plants keep aphids away and mozzies also hate the scent.
Catnip - Is one of the most powerful mozzie repellant plants. Recent studies have shown it is ten times more effective than DEET at repelling mozzies.
Basil - Grow this herb in pots and stand them in the barbecue area or near an open door or window to keep flies and mozzies away. You can also spread the leaves around to repel ants.
With all of these plants the leaves must be crushed to release the aroma, otherwise mozzies can't smell them. A few leaves from Rosemary and Catnip can be crushed and rubbed on your skin to enhance the effect.
These plants do well in garden beds or planted in pots. The pots can easily be moved to where children play or moved to barbecue areas and patios. It's worth a try.
Ask at your local garden centre for more information about mozzie repelling plants.
Make sure water has not collected in pot plant saucers, children's toys, palm fronds, ponds without fish and anywhere else mozzies can breed.
Mozzies are a health risk and can transmit Ross River Virus, Barmah Forrest Virus and Dengue Fever.
