The Shire of Capel falls within the South West Biodiversity hotspot. This area is one of the 12 most bio-diverse regions in the world. There are rare plants and animals in this region that are found nowhere else.
The Shire has a range of information brochures to assist in the protection of this natural heritage.
Reducing Nutrients in the Catchment
Runoff from the Capel Shire drainage system goes into Geographe Bay. To help protect this important marine environment, landholders are encouraged to use native plants in their gardens to reduce the need for fertilisers and water.
The Shire employs a Natural Resource Management Officer (NRMO) who provides information and assistance to the community to help manage the natural environment in a sustainable way.
Our NRMO is available to give talks to groups on natural resource management topics and provide advice to individual landholders.
Our NRMO holds regular free water testing days where local residents can have their dam, creek, bore and tank water tested for salinity and acidity.

Fox Trapping Using Cage Traps
Between 2010 and 2011 three local governments used State NRM funds to work with professional trappers and the community to learn how to successfully cage-trap foxes in urban areas. This protocol outlines the steps to take to successfully trap foxes in urban areas.
