Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades
Under the State Government Emergency Management arrangements, local government is the Hazard Management Agency for fire prevention outside of Gazetted Fire & Emergency Service Authority (FESA) fire districts.
In response to this obligation the Shire of Capel maintains five bush fire brigades, strategically located at Boyanup, Capel, Elgin, Gelorup and Peppermint Grove Beach.
With a membership in excess of 100 trained volunteers, the Shire of Capel Fire Services offers an efficient fire fighting service to residents. The Council is indebted to this committed group of volunteers for providing this essential service to our community.
Council receives advice on the management of fires and related risks in the community from the Shire's Bush Fire Advisory Committee. This Committee comprises representatives of all brigades as well as FESA and the Department of Environment & Conservation.
The Brigades are equipped with 9 modern four wheel drive vehicles comprising of 5 medium tanker units as well as 4 Light Attack Appliances. The Brigades are also backed up with a modern communication system for call outs as well as communication on the fire ground.
