The
Shire of Capel is situated in the shores of Geographe Bay approximately
212 kilometres south west of Perth. The Shire has an area of 554
square kilometres, extending from the 27 kilometres of pristine
beach fronting onto Geographe Bay to the edge of the Darling Scarp.
The Shire has a blend or rural countryside, rolling hills and
wide open spaces. Popular beaches, rich Jarrah forests and the
magnificent Tuart forest which is part of the only naturally occurring
Tuart forest in the world.
The Capel River discharges into Geographe Bay at Peppermint Grove
whilst the Preston River forms part of the Shire’s eastern
boundary and the Ludlow River forms part of the southern boundary.
The Shires boundaries take in the town sites of Boyanup and Capel,
the semi rural settlements of Gelorup, Stratham and the beachside
estates of Peppermint Grove Beach and Dalyellup.
The Shire of Capel is one of the fastest growing regions of Western
Australia with a growing diverse economic base. Capel’s
traditional industries have been agricultural, predominantly dairying,
beef, orchards and viticulture. Challenge Dairy has factories
in both the Capel and Boyanup townsites and supplies both the
local, interstate and export markets with processed dairy products.
Capel Vale winery also supplies local, interstate and export markets.
The largest industry in the Shire is Iluka Resources which is
involved in minerals sands exploration, project development, operations
and marketing.
The nature of the Shire is changing with the extensive residential
growth being experienced in the northern end of the Shire with
the massive growth in Dalyellup. The urban growth is changing
the predominantly rural nature of the district to an urban outlook.
Changes in age structure and cultural diversity of residents’
poses significant challenges in the management of current and
future demand for quality lifestyles and managing growth in a
sea change community.
Capel Shire is unique in its diversity and we invite you to take
the time to explore and experience our wonderful landscape and
all it has to offer.
